During a ceremony on January 11, the 5th floor commons room of SAS Hall was dedicated as the Daniel L. Solomon Statistics Commons. This honor was given in appreciation of Dean Solomon's role in the building of SAS Hall and for his continued advocacy of the Department of Statistics. In addition to departmental faculty and staff, the event was attended by Department Head Montserrat Fuentes, Chancellor Randy Woodson, UNG Board of Governors Member Ann Goodnight, and, of course, Dean Solomon and his family. You can read more on the PAMS Website and check out photos of the event on Flickr.

To offer our students the best statistics education possible, the department continues to expand our current curriculum. Many new advanced graduate courses are being added, covering topics such as Historical Breakthroughs in Statistics, Ethics in Statistics, Statistics and Financial Risk, and High-Dimensional and Mass Data. Furthermore, a new master's concentration in Financial Statistics is now offered. Finally, the department will begin offering a new One-Year Master of Statistics Program beginning in May.

Congratulations to our own Alison Montsinger-Reif for being included in NC State's inaugural class of University Faculty Scholars. Also, congratulations to Michael Dickey and William Hunt, the sons of statistics professors David Dickey and Bill Hunt, for also being selected. This award recognizes the top early- and mid-career faculty from across the university. Recipients will receive $10,000 for each of the next five years to support their academic endeavors. The program is part of the university's strategic initiative to invest in and retain top faculty. It is funded by generous gifts totaling $5.7 million: $3 million from Jim and Ann Goodnight and $2.7 million from the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust.
Capital One Financial Modeling Competition

Throughout the fall semester, nine teams from the Department of Statistics participated in the Capital One Financial Modeling Competition. Working in groups of three or four, the teams were tasked to predict fraudulent credit card transactions while accounting for the risks of both false positive and false negative results. Most excitingly, the team comprised of NC State graduate students Joe Usset, Andrew Beam and Siddharth Roy were one of five teams nationwide invited to the final round of competion. Congratulations to them and to all of the teams!
The 5th Moment plays AISC Conference
Members of 5th Moment perform - Courtesy Kyle White
On October 6, 2012, the department's all-student band, The 5th Moment, played during the banquet dinner at the International Conference on Advances in Interdisciplinary Statistics and Combinatorics (AISC) at UNC Greensboro. With songs like The CRLB and Super Bayes, the group artfully re-imagines popular songs with statistical lyrics. You can read some of their lyrics here (opens as PDF). Guitarist Joe Usset describes the band as follows: "Kyle White (guitar) is the first moment. The random variance in our playing comes from me minus Kyle squared. Kristin Linn and Brad Turnbull (keyboard, vocals) make the band positively non-normal, as highly charismatic 3rd and 4th moments. Sidd Roy (bass) is our essential, mysterious, fifth moment." The 5th Moment also will be performing at the 2013 U.S. Conference on Teaching Statistics on May 17 in Cary, NC.
